During Mailbox Improvement Week hosted by the United States Postal Service, agency officials are encouraging Americans to upgrade to jumbo sized mailboxes that are better suited to accomodate large packages. As well, general maintenance of mailboxes and their surroundings are also encouraged to include fixing loose hinges on the door, repainting or replacing a box that has started to rust or peel, remounting a loosened post, and replacing or adding house numbers to the mailbox. The USPS website also advises new boxes be installed so that the bottom of the mailbox sit at a vertical height of between 3 and a half to 4 feet from the surface of the road. Mailbox Improvement Week is the third week of May every year.
