Turns out it was created over 50 years ago by a creative team at a Richmond advertising agency. Originally conceived as "Virginia is for history lovers," the slogan was later simplified to its current form. 10 On Your Side reports that the phrase has since become a beloved symbol of Virginia's tourism industry and was inducted into the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame in 2009. Forbes also recognized it as one of the top ten tourism marketing campaigns of all time.
