A major Virginia city elects its 1st female Black mayor. The newly elected Mayor of Alexandria is 35 yr old Alyia Gaskins. The Democrat is moving up from city councilwoman and tells News-4 it's with hope and optimism.....Preview: Gaskins says she's committed to making Alexandria safer, more affordable, more accessible, and a city that works for everyone. She beat 2 other Democrats in the June primary and then cruised to victory because she was unopposed.

A longtime northern Virginia Congressman says he’s beginning treatment for esophageal cancer. 74 yr old 11th District Democrat Gerry Connolly has been a powerhouse politician for decades and just won his 9th term in Congress. Treatment will include chemotherapy. Connolly says he’s “very confident” of a successful outcome.
