The ACLU filed a Title IX lawsuit against the Hanover County school board on Wednesday. The district is accused of blocking a transgender middle school student from playing on a team she qualified for during tryouts. The organization says board members voted to exclude the student, despite her parent's showing them the documentation they requested. The child's father says parents should be determining whether their kids participate in extracurriculars, not the government or elected officials. Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federally funded educational programs. Hanover County Schools will decide if the student will play on the girls' sports team in the fall before the court is expected to hear arguments in the case.
