Since the release of Chat GPT in 2022, many believe artificial intelligence has been revolutionizing the urban planning processes. Dr. Junghwan Kim from Virginia Tech decided to test if Chat GPT could identify areas in need of maintenance or to test the area for safety for pedestrians. The group used an AI-based research scooter to assess walkability in Blacksburg. WDBJ reports, while the AI was not perfect and would need more fin-tuning, the tool could potentially reduce manual labor in city planning and improve public health outcomes. They hope to involve city leaders in Roanoke and the New River Valley in future projects.
