In Southwest Virginia, teacher vacancy rates are around 3%, with Lynchburg City Schools having the highest rate at 12.3%. Fewer students are choosing to enter the field of education with reasons including the difficulty and cost of obtaining certifications, cuts to education programs, and lower teacher pay in Virginia. WDBJ reports districts like Roanoke City Public Schools are getting creative with staffing solutions, such as partnering with colleges and apprenticeship programs. The ongoing issue of staffing shortages is not only impacting teachers but also support staff like aides and bus drivers.
