Antibiotic-resistant infections are on the rise in Southwest Virginia and across the U.S., with nearly three million people affected annually. Doctors have been studying antimicrobial resistance in the region and are collaborating with Virginia Tech on a $3 million EPA-funded study to track the source of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in wastewater. WDBJ reports that the research aims to identify resistance genes in communities to guide clinical decision-making, which could lead to 10 million deaths globally by 2050.
