A Prince Edward County businessman has been picked as the Republican nominee for the District Ten state Senate seat. Luther Cifers beat out six other candidates for the nomination during a mass meeting in Goochland on Friday. Cifers will now face Democrat Jack Trammel in a January 7th special election to replace former state Senator John McGuire. McGuire resigned from the post after being elected to Congress.
Governor Youngkin wants to add millions of dollars in new education funding to the state budget. The governor announced Friday that he wants to increase direct aid to Virginia schools by over 500-million dollars. The governor is expected to unveil all of his proposed budget amendments later this week.
Police have recaptured a man who escaped from a Danville mental hospital late last week. Hunter Bryce Long the Third reportedly escaped from the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute on Friday afternoon. He was found at a Dollar General store in the city a few hours later. Long is facing charges for allegedly assaulting a Danville police officer last month.
