Wildlife officials say black bears will den in brush piles, tree cavities, rock outcroppings, ground nests, debris piles, and even under porches or in unsecured crawl spaces. A department spokesperson tells CBS 6 people should avoid hiking in dense brush or young cutover timber stands and always keep dogs on a leash. If you find a den close to public outdoor spaces, do not disturb the den and notify officials with a GPS point of the location. If the mom runs off, do not go inside or try to care for the cubs. Leave the area immediately and the mother bear will return.
