Preliminary testing has found birds from Hampton Roads, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have been infected with the virus. Hampton Roads has seen a larger amount of dead birds than normal. Grebes, sanderlings, and gulls appear to be the most affected by the bird flu. The CDC says the risk of contracting the bird flu from wild birds and commercial poultry is still low, but it's still advised to wear gloves, masks and eye protection when handling dead birds.
