The Boar’s Head deli meat plant in Jarratt has been shut down indefinitely due to a deadly listeria outbreak, resulting in hundreds of employees losing their jobs. NewsNation reports the outbreak led to a recall of over 7 million pounds of product, with the plant remaining non-operational since July. CDC officials say nine people have died and many others hospitalized as a result of the outbreak. Boar’s Head plans to hire a new chief food safety officer and establish a food safety council to prevent future outbreaks.
