Montgomery County Public Schools proposed an additional $5.6 million dollars for the upcoming school year’s budget to enhance programs, including a dual-language immersion program, $16 minimum wage for all employees, and free breakfast and lunch for students. The Board of Supervisors approved only $2.7 million dollars of the requested funds. Superintendent Dr. Bernard Bragen tells WDBJ tough choices may need to be made if additional funding is not secured. County leaders proposed a one-cent increase in the real estate tax rate to generate $1.2 million in tax revenue to support the school budget. A public hearing on the tax rate is scheduled for this/Thursday evening from 7 to 9pm at the Montgomery County Government Center in Christiansburg.
