House Bill 2165 was passed despite similar legislation failing last year. The new bill bans candidates from using campaign money for personal expenses. Exceptions to the new rules allow using campaign money if part of the contribution is used to fulfill any commitment, obligation, or expense that would exist outside of the candidates' personal use. Candidates must request an advisory opinion from the State Board of Elections. The bill goes into effect on July 1st of next year.
