The city released a statement yesterday after Delegate Mike Cherry filed a bill to establish the Tri-Cities Improvement Commission. The commission would decide how to disburse revenue generated from a casino planned for Petersburg. The money would be shared with Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Dinwiddie County and Prince George County. Petersburg officials say the bill was filed without their input, and it sets a destructive precedent by taking control away from local governments and citizens. The city also says the commission would deprive Petersburg of much-needed resources to support its many needs. Officials are asking for the bill to be withdrawn.
