Roanoke College is investigating claims of higher-than-normal cancer rates among young alumni and faculty members following an article by Air Mail senior editor Clara Molot titled “Mysterious Cancer Surge.” WSLS reports the college is working with an environmental services company to determine the validity of these claims and reassure the community of its safety. The article claims more than a dozen alumni from the classes of 2011 to 2019 have been diagnosed with cancer. As expected, President Frank Shushok maintains that Roanoke College is a safe place and that there is no evidence of increased cancer risk among its graduates. The school says it will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
