The Virginia Aquarium Stranding team says at least five Kemp's ridley sea turtles were found Tuesday. Kemp's ridley turtles are critically endangered and the smallest sea turtle species. 13News Now reports some turtles were found alive but later determined to be deceased. Aquarium officials say that the number of dead stranded turtles is not abnormal for the season, but they will monitor the area for further strandings. Samples will be taken from the turtles to investigate the cause of the cluster.
