After pleading guilty, former legal secretary Amy Padgett was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for embezzling $260,000 from a Roanoke law firm and its clients. Court reports say Padgett struggled to explain her actions, citing financial hardship as the reason for her crimes. The Roanoke Times reports she used the stolen money for personal expenses and gifts, and her crimes went unnoticed as her employer worked from home during the pandemic. The law firm's clients suffered losses, and the firm was placed in receivership. Padgett pleaded guilty to credit card fraud, forgery, and embezzlement, and was sentenced to prison and ordered to pay restitution.
