The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission is considering how to allocate $12 million for energy projects to revitalize two regions impacted by the decline of the tobacco industry. The Energy Ingenuity Fund has received applications for projects such as biomass operations, transformer upgrades, and waste-to-energy demonstrations in Southside and Southwest Virginia. The Virginia Mercury reports the commission hopes to support projects that will create jobs and enhance the energy infrastructure in the region. A third round of funding expects to open after the next meeting in September.
