The committee met for the first time on Tuesday at the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus in Alexandria. Lawmakers were told that the state's research universities are facing significant cuts in funding that could hurt research and development on their campuses. Some schools may be forced to raise tuition to compensate for the cuts. The committee will have more meetings in other parts of the state before making any recommendations to the General Assembly.
