The Moneta [[mun-E-ta]] Volunteer Fire Department in Bedford County responds to over 400 calls annually and relies on funding from the county and donations to purchase essential equipment like the "Jaws of Life" for car crash rescues. Assistant Chief Laird Wysor says their Facebook fundraising goal is $40 thousand dollars, and so far they have only received $150. He tells WFXR they also need a new engine for one of their trucks. The department is facing financial challenges as they have a new unit on order costing nearly $1.1 million dollars. Meanwhile, their annual operating budget from the county is only $325 thousand dollars a year. He says the volunteer firemen rely on donations and often have to finance their apparatus due to budget constraints.
