Healthy Harvest Community Garden in Halifax provides fresh produce to address food insecurity in the community. A recent health needs assessment by Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital identified food insecurity and food deserts as major barriers to health in Halifax County. The assessment also highlighted nutrition as a top health concern in the region. Your G-V dot com reports the findings were based on online surveys conducted by Sentara and in-person focus groups organized by Tri-County Community Action. This as a new study published in the BMJ journal shows "ready-to-eat" meat, poultry, and seafood and ultra-processed foods high in sugar, sodium, and carbs, while low on fiber, are linked to a higher risk of early death.
