(Richmond, VA) -- Governor Youngkin joins lawmakers in wanting to help children in the commonwealth avoid going into foster care when possible. Sara Bartlett has the story.Preview: Voicer Script:
The governor signed two bipartisan bills and created the Parental Child Safety Placement Program. The program allows local Departments of Social Services to facilitate agreements between a child's biological parents and a relative or close family friend to care for the child instead of placing them in foster care. WRIC reports whomever will take guardianship of the at-risk child must first be screened and approved by both the parents and social workers. Approved kinship caregivers will then gain access to financial aid and support services. After the 90 day arrangement, an evaluation will determine the best interest of the child.
