Black communities such as the Queen City community removed to build the Pentagon, and the Willard community displaced to build Washington Dulles Airport are examples of decades of removal of Black families and businesses in Virginia. Documented instances date back to the early 1600s. A recent investigation by the Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism revealed that 76 communities in 38 localities in Virginia have experienced displacement. The Cardinal News reports displacements have occurred due to expansion of colleges and highways, development projects that accomodate businesses, and more. Many Black communities in Virginia continue to face the threat of displacement today.
