Officials said the decision was made in order to prioritize conservation efforts. VMRC Commissioner Jamie Green emphasized the importance of adaptive management to ensure the long-term health of the blue crab fishery. The decision follows recommendations from the Crab Management Advisory Committee and aims to create a regulatory framework for winter dredging. Wavy reports that in addition, the commission voted to end the crab pot season on Dec. 16 and reopen it on March 17.
