A judge ordered Jack Eugene Turner to pay his neighbors, John and Keena Mitchell and Roy and Traze Witcher, $2.5 million dollars in a civil lawsuit in December. The families of the victims, who are Black, were compensated for the damages they suffered during a yearslong conflict that started in 2015. The most egregious incident occurred when the man hung a dark-clad dummy from a noose in his front yard, violating a Virginia statute. Despite the verdict, Roanoke dot com reports the families still feel uncomfortable in their homes and continue to struggle with the trauma caused by the intimidation.
