The city of Portsmouth is activating its cooling stations through Saturday due to a high heat index. Anyone who needs a place to escape from the hot temperatures can go into City Hall, public libraries, the Senior Station, the Behavioral Healthcare Services Building and the Social Services-slash-Human Services building. They will all roughly open between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. and close between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The National Weather Service says a Heat Advisory is in effect for most of Virginia's central, southeastern, and northern counties until this evening. Feels-like temperatures are expected to reach up to 109 degrees. Some areas are expected to be placed on an excessive heat watch on Friday.
