The study was led by a Virginia Tech professor and used information gathered by the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service and the state Department of Forestry. The report estimates the direct loss to farms and communities at just over 174-million dollars. The study also estimates Virginia farmers will lose nearly 51-million dollars in future income, while the ripple effect from the damage will add up to 400-million dollars to the total. The report was put together to help determine the amount of state and federal relief needed in the region.
