The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy report revealed one quarter of low-income residents spend over 17.5% of their income just on electricity and heating/cooling expenses. Researchers tell the Virginia Mercury it's important to improve energy efficiency in older, less efficient buildings to alleviate the financial strain on vulnerable households. Policy recommendations include making cost-saving programs more accessible and leveraging federal funding opportunities for energy efficiency upgrades.
