Fries Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at the historic Washington Inn Hotel in Fries on January 1st. Galax Fire Department Tower 11 also assisted in the response, and no injuries were reported. The fire was contained to the room it originated in, with minor smoke damage to the rest of the building. The inn, originally built in 1902 to house local mill workers, had been remodeled with modern amenities while maintaining its historic charm.
