The Virginia Department of Emergency Management says June 1 officially marks the beginning of Atlantic Hurricane Season and all this week, the agency is sharing tips for everyone to be prepared. First, have a plan -- that is, know an evacuation route in the case of severe weather and build a kit with emergency food, water and other items that will last for at least 72-hours. You can get your home ready by cleaning out drains and gutters to prevent backups and make sure things in your back and front yard are secured. You'll also want to check your carbon monoxide detector to make sure it's working. Emergency management officials say you may want to look into flood insurance as well, but that it can take up to 30 days for a policy to begin.
