>>State Board May End Support For Planned Interstate In Western Virginia
(Richmond, VA) -- A long-planned project to build an interstate in western Virginia is about to be tabled by the state. Richard Stelling reports.Preview: Voicer Script:
The Commonwealth Transportation Board announced yesterday that it is recommending support for a bypass around Martinsville called the Southern Connector. The proposed highway would connect the current Route 58 Bypass with Interstate 73 in North Carolina. The decision would table a plan approved more than 20 years ago that would have extended I-73 through western Virginia. State transportation leaders say federal funding for the interstate hasn't materialized, making the Southern Connector easier to support.
