The Hanover landfill is seeking to expand despite recent detections of contaminants like chloroform and cobalt in the groundwater. The landfill operator disputes many of the readings, attributing them to testing errors or anomalies. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports the facility has faced scrutiny from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for groundwater contamination exceedances and improper reporting. Residents, including those from the historically Black community of Brown Grove, oppose the expansion, citing broken promises and environmental risks. The Board of Supervisors will decide on the expansion proposal in April.
