(Richmond, VA) -- An invasive insect species is leaving Virginia communities in a bit of a sticky situation. Madison Roberts explains.Preview: Wrap Script:
Spotted lanternflies are found all over the state. They are known to leave behind a clear sticky residue on cars and trees that's commonly known as honeydew. The substance can grow into a black mold.Preview: Scott Baker with the Virginia Cooperative Extension tells ABC13 that the best way to get rid of the honeydew is by rinsing it off every few days. This will prevent the fungus from growing. In more serious cases, people may need to treat their trees with insecticide. He says residents will only need to deal with the insects for a couple more months... at least until next season.
