Ten states, including Virginia, joined the PA Licensure Compact this year, allowing Physician's Assistants to practice in multiple states without additional licenses. While some medical associations express concerns about patient safety and scope of practice, the Virginia Mercury reports supporters argue that the compact streamlines administrative burdens and benefits underserved areas. The compact's implementation is expected to take 18 to 24 months and 12 other states already enacted the legislation to join. Advocates like Monica Ward of the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants are pushing for its adoption in all states to address healthcare shortages in rural areas.
