(Fairfax County, VA) -- Restaurant workers in Virginia are protesting a proposed meal tax they say could impact their pay. Rocio Rivera has more.Preview: The Board of Supervisors in Fairfax County have proposed a 1% meal tax on all prepared foods from restaurants, cafeterias, coffee shops, food carts, and ready-to-eat grocery items. County leaders say it would generate $33 million dollars in revenue. But workers in the food and beverage industry say it could hurt them and affect their income since they live off tips. And some in the industry say this could disproportionately affect lower income residents who rely more on prepared foods. Many Northern Virginia areas like Arlington, Alexandria and Prince William County already have a food tax. If the board approves the tax, it could be on receipts by Jan 2026. I'm RR.
