The Mountain Spirit Trail, a collaboration between Franklin, Patrick, and Floyd counties in south central Virginia, celebrates the region's moonshine heritage. Visitors can explore the history bootlegging corn whiskey by visiting sites of destroyed stills, museums, and enjoy tastings of legally produced moonshine from local distilleries. The trail, still under development, will feature 10 to 12 sites in each county, showcasing the rich Appalachian tradition of moonshine production. The Cardinal News reports the unveiling event at the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum last week highlighted the trail's focus on preserving and sharing the region's moonshine history. With plans to promote tourism and economic growth, the Mountain Spirit Trail representatives plan to release complete trail information this fall.
