The Williams Companies plans to expand its natural gas pipeline with the Transco Power Express project, which will supply up to 950 million cubic feet of gas daily to markets north of the Transco compressor station in Chatham. The Cardinal News reports the project aims to use existing infrastructure to reduce permitting risks and is expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2030. Virginia's increasing demand for electricity makes natural gas a crucial fuel source, with the state relying on it for over half of its electricity generation. Environmental groups have expressed concerns about the Power Express project, along with other pipeline expansions in the region.
