The airport has experienced financial losses for six years and is projected to have only $1.4 million in unrestricted cash by June. Despite suggestions to cut commercial service, the airport plans to pursue non-traditional aviation uses alongside commercial air service. The city of Newport News has committed to providing $3 million for operations and $1 million for capital projects, but some City Council members were not aware of this commitment. WAVY reports that discussions on the airport's future and funding sources are ongoing.
