Randomly selected high schools will have OpenGate weapons detectors installed, which are designed to detect handguns, long guns, and knives using low-frequency electromagnetic fields. The detectors aim to provide fast and efficient screening without traditional X-rays. Students and visitors will undergo secondary screening if an alarm sounds, ensuring a safe environment for all individuals. WTOP reports that the program is part of the district's efforts to enhance security, with funding allocated from a class-action lawsuit settlement with an e-cigarette company.
