Often, people working in social services can find themselves with empathy burnout due to heavy workloads and difficult situations in communities with high poverty rates. Poverty simulations, like the one organized by United Way in Henry County aim to build empathy among public servants by immersing them in the challenges faced by families living in poverty. The Cardinal News reports participants experience the struggles of daily life, such as paying bills and accessing healthcare, in a simulated month-long scenario. The program seeks to spark conversations and help participants understand the complexities of poverty, ultimately fostering empathy and understanding in community-facing roles.
