A defunct Appalachian Power coal-fired power plant in Glen Lyn is being considered for reuse as a potential site for a manufacturing company or other businesses to replace lost jobs and tax revenue. The building features sturdy masonry, high ceilings, and tens of thousands of square feet of usable space. County Administrator Chris McKlarney says a study funded by a federal grant will determine the best options for the site's future, including potential environmental remediation and demolition. The Cardinal News reports the plant, which operated for nearly a century before shutting down in 2015, employed hundreds of people and was a significant part of the community's history.
