Chesapeake Regional Medical Center has opened a new psychiatric emergency room to provide immediate care for patients in mental health crises. The facility aims to reduce wait times and offer specialized treatment in a calming environment separate from the typical emergency room setting. The Virginia Mercury reports the project was partially funded by a state grant and is part of a larger psychiatric emergency program at the hospital. The new ER is expected to alleviate the need for police officers to monitor patients, allowing them to focus on other core services in the community.
