(Richmond, VA) -- Some Richmond officials think too many public housing tenants are being evicted. Richard Stelling has more.Preview: Voicer Script:
The Richmond Regional Housing Authority evicted 13 families this year. City Council President Kristen Nye wants to see less evictions over small amounts of money or other minor issues. She says evicting public housing tenants during a housing crisis puts more strain on city resources when the city doesn't have a lot of options. Councilmember Stephanie Lynch says public housing is our housing of last resort, and they shouldn't operate like a private landlord. Councilmember Andreas Addison tells CBS 6, he wants to make sure residents at all income levels have the ability to stay in their home as long as they can.
OPTIONAL TAG:
The website for the Richmond Regional Housing Authority says approximately six percent of residents carry arrearages from month to month. The agency offers income-based repayment options and an Eviction Prevention Program that offer rent relief. It is unclear what violations the 13 evicted families committed.
