Oral rabies vaccine baits have been air dropped by the USDA this week. They're targeting areas in Abingdon, Bland, Bristol, Giles, Grayson, Russell, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington and Wythe counties. The Virginia Department of Health says the baits areplastic packets of vaccine coated with a sticky, scented substance to attract raccoons. They say if your pet finds a bait, don't try to remove it from their mouth. Instead confine your pet and remove baits from areas where they can eat them. Also they advise to wear gloves if you handle any bait, but if you are exposed to contact the VDH with the number located on the packet. I'm RR.
