Roanoke Police Chief Scott Booth says his department reduced gun violence in the city since his arrival, with only 7 shootings reported from January to May this year compared to 28 last year. The Gun Violence Prevention Commission is pleased with the decline and wants to address what they believe to be the root causes of gun violence, like poverty. The Roanoke Times reports Booth plans to continue his focus on gang-related incidents and wants to equip his department to seize illegal firearms and arrest violent offenders. The commission and police department are working together to maintain the positive trend and ensure transparency and accountability to the community.
