The Virginia House of Delegates passed resolutions enshrining rights to abortion, voting, and marriage equality, a critical step in the process of amending the state's constitution next year. The abortion ballot measure, if successful, would make Virginia one of the few southern states to protect reproductive rights through a constitutional amendment. Lawmakers also voted to revise the process for restoring voting rights for people with felony convictions.
WRIC reports the proposed constitutional amendments must be passed twice in at least two years, with a legislative election in between, before being put to a public referendum.
