Governor Glenn Youngkin vetoed legislation that would have established a regulated and taxed recreational cannabis marketplace in Virginia that would have started in May of 2026. The proposal, passed by the General Assembly, aimed to allow people to buy cannabis for recreational use, but VPM dot com reports Youngkin cited concerns about health and safety, gang activity, and increased crime as reasons for the veto. Advocates for the bill argued that a legal retail market would help move users away from the illegal market, generate tax revenue, and address racial disparities in marijuana-related arrests.
