>>Some Richmond Students Not Walking At Graduation
(Richmond, VA) -- When Richmond Public School students graduate later this week, nearly a dozen won't be walking during the ceremonies. Sara Bartlett has more.Preview: Voicer Script:
Eleven out of around 1,000 students are not permitted to walk at graduation this year. WTVR-TV reports that it's because of safety concerns following last year's deadly shooting at the Huguenot High School graduation ceremony. The district says those who are not allowed are either homebased students or court-involved students. Last year, Shawn Jackson was killed after the ceremony, it was later determined that Jackson should not have been allowed there in the first place because there were threats of violence against him. Amari Pollard pled guilty to first-degree murder and later tried to withdraw that plea, but a judge ruled against it. Meanwhile, Richmond Public Schools announced last week there will be increased security at this year's graduation ceremonies, including metal detectors. No one without a ticket will be allowed in.
