>>Freedom of Choice for Workers or an Attack on Unions; Lawmakers Discuss Virginia Constitutional Amendement
(Richmond, VA) -- A proposed constitutional amendment in Virginia to include a "right-to-work" law was defeated by Democrats on the Senate Privileges and Elections Committee. Thomas Cage with more.Preview: Voicer Script:
The language in the amendment aimed to protect workers from being fired based on union membership or refusal to join a union. Supporters, like Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl-Sears, tell WRIC they, "...are pro-worker. We are not anti-union" and they argue that embedding these laws in the state constitution would safeguard worker freedom. However, Democratic Senator Aaron Rouse, chairman of the committee, claims "unions are under attack today". Other opponents argued that the amendment was unnecessary. While the measure was blocked in the Senate, two more versions have been introduced in the House and are awaiting next steps.
