First, all boaters, no matter their age, should wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket, regardless of how small or large the body of water is. As well, you should tell someone staying behind where you are going and when you plan to return. Officials also recommend you check the forecast often in order to avoid getting caught in a storm. It is also encouraged that you be familiar with your vessel and have a plan to reboard the boat in case anything unexpected happens and you and others end up in the water. National Safe Boating Week spans from Saturday, May 18 through Friday, May 24.
